The 30th of April has witnessed the release of several big hits films in Bollywood down the years, including Damini, Sarfarosh, Housefull 1 and Main Hoon Na. These larger-than-life films struck gold at the box office and the date has somehow proved lucky time and again for producers. These films not only won praise for their well-packaged family entertainment, but also won millions of hearts with their outstanding performances that are still appreciated. So, in today’s segment of ‘This Day, That Year’, let’s take a look at how April 30th has proved to be a beautiful day in Bollywood history time and again.
Damini (1993)
This legal drama film was directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and starred Meenakshi Seshadri in the titular role alongside Sunny Deol, Rishi Kapoor, Amrish Puri and Paresh Rawal in pivotal roles. The movie was released on 30 April, 1993. The story of the film was about a woman who fights against the society and her own in-laws for justice for another woman. Damini is still considered as the best woman-centric film ever made in Bollywood. The film became a super-duper hit and within no time, received appreciation from critics as well as moviegoers.
Sarfarosh (1999)
Sarfarosh was directed by John Matthew Matthan and starred Aamir Khan, Naseeruddin Shah, Mukesh Rishi, and Sonali Bendre in main roles. The film deals with how an Indian police officer tries to stop cross-border terrorism. The movie was released just before the Kargil conflict on 30 April, 1999, and received praise for its exceptional storyline and casting. The film received several awards for its music, too, which was well composed by the legendary Jatin Lalit, with the lyrics penned by Israr Ansari, Nida Fazli, Sameer and Indeevar.
Main Hoon Na (2004)
Directed and written by Farah Khan, Main Hoon Na was released on 30 April, 2004. The movie starred Shah Rukh Khan, Sushmita Sen, Suniel Shetty, Amrita Rao and Zayed Khan in pivotal roles. The storyline of the movie revolved around an Indian Army Officer (Major Ram Sharma, played by Shah Rukh Khan) who’s sent as an undercover agent to a university to protect the daughter (Sanjana, played by Amrita Rao) of General Bakshi (Kabir Bedi) from a rogue soldier, Raghavan Dutta, (Suniel Shetty). The movie did amazingly well at the box office and was the second-highest-grossing Indian movie that year. The movie had a list of superhit songs that are still quite popular among the audience.
Housefull (2010)
Housefull is a light-hearted comedy film, which was directed by Sajid Khan and starred Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone, Riteish Deshmukh, Lara Dutta, Arjun Rampal, and Jiah Khan. The supporting cast consists of Boman Irani, Chunky Pandey, Randhir Kapoor, Lillete Dubey, and Malaika Arora. The film was released on April 30, 2010, and became a commercial success. The storyline of the movie is about Aarush (Akshay Kumar), who is termed as a ‘panauti’ (unlucky guy). The movie was Akshay’s biggest opener after Singh Is Kinng at the time.
