It is sad but true. Rupal Patel aka Kokilaben Modi is all set to bid adieu to Saath Nibhaana Saathiya 2. It is tough to imagine the show without her, such is the power of her flawless performance as Kokila Modi. The actress who is a NSD pass-out says she is glad that she got to play such an iconic character. Here are excerpts from an interview…
On Yeh Rishtey Hain Pyaar Ke’s end…
I was quite sad because Meenakshi Rajvansh is close to my heart. I am glad that being an NSD graduate, I could play two iconic roles on TV. Meenakshi Rajvansh is a modern educated businesswoman who manages her business, relationships and her sautan. It was a beautifully written role. I am sad but I am sure something new will come up in the future.
Step-motherly treatment to TV stars from Bollywood…
I have never done a Bollywood film. Throughout my career, I have done theatre and TV. I never faced any kind of discrimination. I have my degree in acting from NSD, which I got after my B.Com. It is the most progressive and scientific acting school in India. So, when I went out to seek work after my course, it was easy for me to meet people. When people heard that I was from NSD, no one questioned by talent. I kept on getting work. I never faced this.
TRPs Vs Content
I do not agree that TRPs kill content. I feel TV is the strongest media in India. The kind and variety of shows we have seen on Indian TV is far bigger than what Bollywood has given us. Today, people are hooked to digital content but TV viewership is still in millions. Secondly, I feel TRPs should be there. This is the entertainment industry. It is a business of demand and supply. If there are TRPs, there is competition. You know where you stand. If your report card is C+, you will work hard to upgrade your work. You will imagine and explore new angles in your content. That challenge is enjoyable for a team.
Fear of Kokila Modi off screen
It happens all the time. Wherever I go, people see me as this Dabangg aurat. They are like, ‘Yeh toh class legi…hum gadbad karenge’. Kokila is famous as she is extremely righteous. There are few like her in this world. They are scared of Kokila’s truthfulness, her sense of justice, righteousness and unwavering honesty. As kids, if we scored poor marks we would be hesitant to show our report cards. We knew we were wrong somewhere. If you are wrong, you are afraid of the truth. I like it…(the fear).
TV Vs Digital
I feel the first season was a progressive one. So many young women came up and said we want a mother-in-law like you. I would be thrilled to bits. The human emotions are universal irrespective of countries, media platforms and age groups. Tears are tears and laughter is laughter. If you emote well, you will touch the viewers’ hearts on whichever medium you’re in. Also, the charm of SNS is the simplicity of the relations. It is about the strength of a saas and the humility of a bahu. It has a permanent resonance in Indian society.
Kokila Vs Rupal
I connect with Kokilaben from Saath Nibhaana Saathiya on almost all levels. She is straight-forward and truthful. Kokila will never support what is wrong. I am also a very black and white person. But she hardly smiles while I have a smiling face. Her voice is on a higher pitch while I am soft-spoken. I feel happy to see the memes. They are made on a person who is special. It is a sign that you are ‘Khaas’.
I leave home at 7am and return at 7pm. As a habit, I watch all my shows. That is the only way you can improve. Now, I do not have that much time to see what others are doing. But in general, I am quite updated with what is happening in Bollywood and TV. I do channel surfing quite often.
Favourite actors in the TV world…
You will get me into trouble (laughs out loud). If I take the name of any one actress and left out open, all daggers will be out. A sword fight will happen (laughs). I would humbly bow down and say all are fabulous, especially my female contemporaries. But, I feel my whole fraternity has immense potential and there’s always scope for improvement.
We just hope that Rupal Patel makes a comeback with another smashing show at the soonest.
