Changing stereotypes
There was a time when actresses in Bollywood hesitated to play mothers like the plague, for fear of being typecast. Not until they reached certain age and lead roles began drying up (another stereotype) that they moved towards motherly characters. However, that seems to have changed in the recent past, and we now have actresses boldly embracing motherhood on screen very early into their film career. Thankfully, the audience perception, too, has changed. Here are 15 actresses who’ve helped break this particular glass ceiling in Bollywood…

Disha Patani
Disha Patani played a mother early on in her career in Baaghi 2.

Yami Gautam
Yami Gautam, too, was seen as a mother quite early into her career in Badlapur.
Sonam Kapoor
Ditto for Sonam Kapoor who was seen as a mother in Mausam.
Jacqueline Fernandez
As well as Jacqueline Fernandez who was a mother to hers and Akshay Kumar’s daughter in Brothers.
Katrina Kaif
Though not that early in her career, but Katrina Kaif was seen as a mother in Tiger Zinda Hai, with Salman Khan being the father
Deepika Padukone
Whereas Deepika Padukone played a mother in Bajirao Mastani.
Lara Dutta
Lara Dutta was seen as a single mother in Salman Khan-Govinda starrer Partner.

Ameesha Patel
In only her second movie, Ameesha Patel played mother to her and Sunny Deol’s boy in Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra played mother to twins in the eponymous Mary Kom.
Kangana Ranaut
While Kangana showed her motherly side, too, as Rani Lakshmi Bai in Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi.
Vidya Balan
Vidya Balan played mother to Amitabh Bachchan no less in Paa.
Rani Mukerji
And Rani Mukerji had two kids in Ta Ra Rum Pum.
Shraddha Kapooor
Shraddha Kapoor also showed her maternal inside in the Haseena Parkar biopic.
Preity Zinta
Preity Zinta played mother in Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna, with Shah Rukh Khan as her husband.
Kajol
Kajol also did a mother’s role before becoming one in real life in Dil Kya Kare, with real-life husband Ajay Devgn playing the father.
