Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been handed a suspended sentence of 21 months and 10 days after being found guilty of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and repeated attempts of bribery on Tuesday after his arrest on the Greek island of Mykonos.

The 27-year-old centre-back was arrested with his brother and a friend last Thursday by Greek police authorities after they got involved in a fight with a group of tourists during his holiday in Mykonos.

“Following the hearing, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing,” said Maguire on Tuesday.

“I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter… if anything myself, family and friends are the victims.”

A police witness for the prosecution told the court that Maguire attempted to bribe his way out of the situation.

“Do you know who I am? I am the captain of Manchester United, I am very rich, I can give you money, I can pay you, please let us go,” the witness told the bench.

On Saturday, the court had been asked to postpone proceedings over the incident and Maguire was released by a Greek prosecutor after spending two days in detention.

Maguire was rescinded from England’s recently-announced UEFA Nations League squad by manager Gareth Southgate.

“In light of this evening’s developments, I can confirm I have withdrawn Harry Maguire from the England squad for the matches against Iceland and Denmark,” said Southgate.

Maguire has earned 26 England caps since making his debut against Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in 2018.

Manchester United paid Leicester City 80 million pounds — a world record fee for a defender — for Maguire in August 2019 and he was made captain at the start of this year.
