Bollywood is not all about drama, humour, mystery or non-sense. Sometimes it also dwells into deeper topics such as journalism. In the past, there have been a few filmmakers who have shown the harships of journalists, be it in a serious or humourous way. As we observe the World Press Freedom Day, let’s take a look at these 5 Bollywood movies that had an interesting point of view (POV) on journalism.

Nayak

Nayak

Nayak, the political drama, remains one of the most appreciated performances of Anil Kapoor. He plays a journalist and goes on to become the Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Late legendary actor Amrish Puri played the role of a corrupt politician who throws a challenge to the journalist to take his job for a day.

Noor

Noor

Starring Sonakshi Sinha, Noor is based on a novel by Pakistani author Saba Imtiaz, called Karachi, You’re Killing Me!. Though the novel is based in Karachi, the makers have taken creative liberties with the script and have set the character and locations around in Mumbai, where Sonakshi plays a journalist. It’s her journey through the field of media, covering dangerous stories while also straightening out her own life and passion. And before you say it, it’s not a breezy Page 3.

No One Killed Jessica

No One Killed Jessica

The spine-chilling film, No One Killed Jessica which is based on the true Jessica murder case, had dared to bring forth the real image of the corrupted system. Rani Mukerji played the role of an investigative journalist Meera who joins forces with Sabrina Lal to seek justice for the latter’s sister.

Peepli Live

Peepli Live

Aamir Khan produced this social satire, Peepli Live, about starving farmers and news-hungry media, that won critical acclaim and was a decent hit at the box office. It starred some fine actors in the mix, including a pre-fame Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

Tere Bin Laden

Tere Bin Laden

Headlined by Ali Zafar, Piyush Mishra and Pradhuman Singh, who played a character modelled on Osama Bin Laden, Tere Bin Laden was a good mix of slapstick and smart humour. Ali plays a reporter with Danka TV, a downmarket local TV channel in Karachi, Pakistan who is keen to migrate to the US for a better life and wants to work for an American news channel.
