Gulshan Devaiah has built quite a reputation for playing dark, borderline deviant character or full-blown villains. He’s now returning to the screen with another dark thriller titled Footfairy, based on a real-life serial killer. To get more into the gist of his new role and what the film is about, BollywoodLife sat down for an exclusive interview with Gulshan Devaiah, and imagine our surprise when he revealed that not only is his movie influenced by the style of legendary Director David Fincher, but also contains a super-secret reference to one of his most acclaimed works.
Opening up on the David Fincher influence in Footfairy, Gulshan Devaiah said, “A lot of the cases that you see (in the film) is based on real cases on which movies have been already made. So, Footfairy is basically a homage to toothfairy, which already existed as a real case and a cinematic version also as a killer (the 2002 movie, Red Dragon). Kanishk Verma (the Director) is a bit of a dark thriller geek, so he has read books that the founder of the FBI has written.”
Elaborating on the Fincher aspect, the talented actor added, “He has read a lot of things. Actually, Mindhunter is originally a book. (the famous web series) Before it was a series, it was a book, and Kanishk had already read that. He loves David Fincher (the Director and executive producer of Mindhunter), I also love David Fincher. So, Fincher has influenced the style of direction and all that and we have also put homages for him in the film, like I have also put some homage pieces for Fincher. Like there’s this one thing I have done for Fincher, which I don’t know whether people will get or not, whoever catches it, good for them.”
When asked which film of David Fincher he has referenced, Gulshan quickly say that we’ll have to catch that while watching his movie. Well, fair enough, especially if you’re a true David Fincher fan.
Footfairy stars Gulshan Devaiah, Sagarika Ghatge and Kunaal Roy Kapur, and is slated to directly premiere on television on 24th October.
